CROCHETED VESSELS

During the year of Spring 2006 - Spring 2007, I made about 100 vessels in crochet for sale at local art shows. These vessels are individually named and numbered unique pieces that are designed and executed by me.

I have done vessels in jute, sisal, hemp, cotton, linen, wool, acrylic, polypropylene, and nylon, although examples of all these types are not shown here. Rayon and polyester frequently occur in the vessels due to blends, but do not constitute 100% of any vessel that I have done to date.

Although the pieces are all fairly stiff, none of the vessels are starched or contain any stiffening material like plastic canvas, and I have not done any crocheting over cord. Rather, the stiffness comes from using hooks that appear quite small for the fiber, and in many cases multiple strands of fiber are used to further increase density and stiffness. Rim edgings such as slip stitch and crab stitch edgings (the firmest edging) also greatly add to the stiffness and stability of the finished structure.
